You will soon be able to chat with Telegram users from WhatsApp

The Digital Market Act takes effect today, after companies had 6 months to comply. However, it seems that some of them have not taken this deadline seriously and are in no hurry to comply with it. While Apple has already received a hefty fine, we have just learned that Meta is working on the interoperability of its services with those of competitors.

As we told youshortly after the measures were put in place, the interoperability of messaging services in the European Union aims to connect them all together. In other words, this means that you will be able tochat with a Telegram, Signal, Viber, or any other messaging app user, directly from WhatsApp.

In beta

While iMessage is ultimately not affected by the DMA, others must comply. As reported by WABetaIinfo, which covers all the new features of WhatsApp:

WhatsApp is working to integrate support for third-party chat in a future app update. — This feature is under development so it is not ready for beta testers, but you can get an overview of it in this article.

Conversations with third-party application users will not offer the same functionalities. For example, it will not be possible to add third-party profiles to WhatsApp groups, and calls are not supported. It seems that for the moment, only written exchanges are envisaged, but this could change in the future.

A less important measure?

While gatekeepers (more than 45 million users in the EU) had 6 months to comply, it seems that no actor concerned with the interoperability of third-party services is currently. For its part, Apple has already suffereda fine of one billion eight hundred million eurosfor dominant position regarding Apple Music.

However, this is a different case, on the one hand there is an action by Apple which can impact competition, while the connection of messaging services between them does not have as much impact on the market.
