Little by little, thepasskeysor access keys are becoming more popular on mobile. And among the popular apps that adopt this technology is WhatsApp. As a reminder, the messaging service already supported passkeys on Android since October 2023. And now,the feature is also available on the iOS versionfrom WhatsApp. The news was announced by WhatsApp, in a publication on its X account.
To be clear, passkeys do not completely replace SMS verification. This remains essential for registration, to allow WhatsApp to confirm that the user is the owner of the telephone number they register. However, after registration, it becomes possible to create a passkey on WhatsApp, as an alternative means of connection.
It is possible that the deployment of this new feature on iOS will take time. But once it is available on your device, you can create your access key by going to WhatsApp settings > Access keys > Create access key. Then you will need to press Continue, and continue to follow the directions.
A new way to connect to WhatsApp
As a reminder, passkeys are an alternative means of connection which does not rely on passwords, but on a cryptographic key system. In essence, the passkey is generated and then stored on your smartphone. And when identifying, you just have to prove that you are in possession of this key, using a biometric sensor (Face ID or Touch ID) or the unlock code from your smartphone.
“Passkey verification will make reconnecting to WhatsApp easier and more secure. We are excited to launch this on WhatsApp and provide users with an extra layer of security”, said Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp product manager, in a statement.
If an already registered user is disconnected from their WhatsApp account, they will no longer be required to go through SMS verification, but will be able to reconnect using the passkey. In a publication onWhatsApp explains that this new solution can be practical for people who are traveling, or those who are unable to receive an SMS due to a network problem.
As a reminder, a WhatsApp user may be required to re-authenticate if they have changed their phone or phone number, or if they are inactive for a period of 120 days.
