The Worldwide Developer Conference will be held in about two months in the United States. It will be possible to follow the event live in our columns. Like every year, numerous software announcements are expected for the occasion, through major updates to Apple operating systems. It seems that for 2024, the focus here has been on iPhones, with few notable changes on the Apple Watch side.
Few new products are generally present at WWDC. However, it happens that computers are released during the conference, as in the case of the Mac Pro in 2019. This may also be the case this year, in particular because the latest generation of the most efficient Apple chip is starting to date. Let's take stock to find out more, a few weeks before D-Day, therefore.
1 – iOS 18 and iPadOS 18: potential new features
To begin with, Apple would obviously have planned to present its usual major and annual iOS update. This version, probably numbered iOS 18, should see the light of day at the same time as iPadOS 18 because the two platforms share a large part of their proprietary source code. We think that many new features will be there, witha particular emphasis on design, ready to draw inspiration from that of visionOS. The journalist ofBloombergMark Gurman estimates in particular that 2024 will mark the first major makeover of the software for iPhone, since that of iOS 7. Enough to make it a historic update, since the start of the program almost fifteen years ago.
With iOS 18, users could customize the home screen even more extensively, including leaving empty spaces between rows of icons – like on Android. In addition, Freeform could allow data to be pinned to its canvas, so that you can quickly get your hands on it when the area of the latter is particularly large. To find out which iPhones and iPads are compatible with these new features, please note thata potential list has already been communicated.
On the tablet side, it is rumored that Apple is planning to bring the “menu” to the iPad.battery health status” already present on iPhone. This section is found within the Settings app, and the number of battery recharge cycles would also be included. This is already the case on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max today.
Finally, note that iOS 18 would also come with support forRCSand some additions on the accessibility side.
2 – AI ads (limited?)
To overshadow the Samsung Galaxy S24, Samsung Galaxy S24+ and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra which also have them, Apple could also want to unveil new features boosted by artificial intelligence on its smartphones. Some would bereserved for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Maxon the mobile side, while others could also be available on macOS.
Among these expected improvements, it is rumored that Apple Music could generate playlists based on your tastes, thanks to AI. With this, Messages could, via the voice assistant Siri, autocomplete your sentences when you dictate SMS messages. Finally, know that the restiWorkcould also benefit from artificial intelligence, with a robot to create images or text on the fly and saving time in Pages or Keynote. OpenAI or Alphabet (Gemini) could be partners with Apple for the occasion.
3 – visionOS 2
Apple is expected to introduce the second major version of visionOS at the Worldwide Developer Conference. The operating system will equip the mixed reality headsetApple Vision Pro, of which a second generation is expected in several semesters.
visionOS 2 could notably support a possible third-generation Apple Pencil, but the accessory is not yet official.
4 – New Mac and macOS features
Apple is expected to unveil the new macOS at WWDC 2024. The associated version will bemacOS 15, but few clues about the associated features have been revealed – except perhaps those of iWork mentioned above, because the suite's software is also available natively on Apple computers.
New Macs could be announced at the same time, along with the chipM3 Ultra. The machines expected soon are the Mac mini M3, the Mac Studio M3 Max / M3 Ultra and the Mac Pro M3 Ultra. However, let's be careful here, as these devices might not arrive until well after the Worldwide Developer Conference.
5 – watchOS 11 and tvOS 18
watchOS 11 and tvOS 18 should show up as updatesminor, compared for example to iOS 18. For watchOS 11, this would be because an Apple Watch
6 – The release date of iOS 18 in beta version
During the Worldwide Developer Conference, Apple will also specify when developers will be able to install the new beta versions of the operating systems presented on the day. You will probably only have to waita few hours, when the final version accessible to the general public will probably require you to wait until September.
