It's been a while since YouTube offered us a really useful feature, one that brings real benefit to users. The app gets regular security updates, but in terms of pure functionality, there's not much new.
This year, for example, we were treated to the integration of “Playables”, a new gaming service directly into the YouTube application. In total,75 mobile gamesare directly offered in the iOS and Android applications.
Today, YouTube is introducing a new experimental crowdsourcing feature, which is inspired by a feature of the social network X. The latter is very successful and has already proven itself many times.
Contextual “notes” are coming to YouTube
Community Notes (or community notes) on X allow users of the platform to enrich content by offering the possibilityadd context to any post. When a user sees content that may be confusing, or make people believe something other than if it had been shared in its entirety, they can suggest a community rating, which must be accompanied by a reliable source.
The latter will then be validated or not by the community using a voting system if it is factual and true. Since their introduction, Community Notes on X have been very reliable and as soon as bad context is added, it is quickly corrected. This can be very useful regarding certain pieces of information shared on the internet, which once contextualized can be perceived in a completely different way.During this election period, the feature is very useful and prevents users from being manipulated.
On the “notes” side of YouTube, the principle is the same.Users can add context, and contributors can add to them, or rate them as “useful,” “somewhat helpful,” or “unhelpful.”. YouTube's algorithm will then be able to determine which "ratings" will be published, based on contributors' opinions.Techcrunchreports on this subject:
The Google-owned company says the feature can be used for things like clarifying when a song is meant to be a parody or letting viewers know when older footage is being shown as a current event.
Notes will initially be available on mobile in the United States, and later in other countries.
