Will 2022 be the year Apple launches into VR?

We have been waiting for several years now for Apple to officially launch into the virtual and augmented reality headset market. The release would have been postponed many times, but the ambitions of the Cupertino company for these projects would remain intact, especially in a context where the metaverse is becoming a fashionable concept.

A launch in spring or at the end of the year?

This subject was precisely addressed by the well-known Apple expert Mark Gurman, in his newsletter published onBloomberg. The analyst discusses the Apple brand's different plans for this year and returns to the subject that interests us here:

The holy grail for 2022, of course, will be Apple's announcement of its first virtual reality headset (with some augmented reality features), codenamed N301, and the accompanying software operating system, whose code name is Oak. But the timing of this product has already been changed in the past. Apple initially targeted 2020, then WWDC 2021 and finally WWDC 2022 for a launch. Stay tuned.

Mark Gurman therefore has no certainty on this subject, but it seems entirely likely that Apple will launch this year. In the past, several consultantshave already mentioned the year 2022as possible output from the VR headset. This is particularly the case for Ming Chi Kuo who is leaning towards the end of the year. Steve Milunovich of Tech Advisor is betting on next spring.

Depending on the case, the strategy would be modeled on Sony's launch of the PSVR 2, a very serious competitor. If released in the spring, Apple would enter into head-on competition with its rival which is releasing its new product at the same time. If the Apple brand launches its headset at the end of the year, it could on the contrary observe the flaws in the Japanese firm's headset to better counter it.
