3 new features of the FaceTime app with iOS 17 and Apple TV

  • With iOS 17, FaceTime allows you to leave a video message if your correspondent does not respond
  • Making a gesture with your hands triggers an animation, to react to the words of the interlocutor
  • iPhone can be used as a camera for FaceTime on Apple TV

After thesome new features of the Photos app, it's time to highlight the new changes coming to FaceTime with iOS 17. The update, available in beta version only (for now), will be released to its final version by September. The opportunity to review the improvements made to the calling platform automatically installed on iPhones…

1 – A unique answering machine

With iOS 17, FaceTime lets you leave an audio or video message for a contact if they don't answer your call. The feature is free, and allows you to use either the front sensor or the back photo module of the iPhone. THEPortrait modeis there if necessary, and content recorded in this way will also be visible on Apple Watch to your correspondent.

2 – React with your hands

Are emojis already out of fashion? This is what this new FaceTime feature suggests, which allows you to make a gesture with your hands to react to what your interlocutor says. For example, thumbs up captured by the front camera trigger a sort of augmented reality fireworks. The only downside, and not the least: this new feature is not at all compatible with all iPhones.

In fact, to benefit from it, you must have one of the following mobiles:

  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • Third generation iPhone SE
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max

Models released afterward, such as the supposed iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, should also be compatible.

3 – FaceTime arrives on Apple TV

Finally, know that you can use your iPhone as a camera to chat via FaceTime with your Apple TV box. A functionality which is of course not without echoing theMagSafe support to do the same on Mac, or the set-top box with integrated camera that the Apple firm would prepare in secret.

FaceTime on Apple TV via iPhone is also not available with all iPhones. You will need to have an iPhone XS, iPhone XR or later models to be eligible. And on the box side, only second-generation Apple TV 4K and later are eligible at the moment.
