The European Commission has just validated an envelope of no less thanfive billion euros for TSMC. The founder, which designs proprietary processors for iPhones and Macs, will benefit its Dresden factory. This is the first established on the Old Continent, but of course the company also has premises in Taiwan, near its head office. They are also found in the United States.
This aid should allow TSMC to develop its activities there more quickly. However, it is still difficult to know whether or not this will have an impact on the price of iPhones sold in Europe. Let us remember that motherboards are today the second most expensive component in an Apple mobile, just after the screen, which would also be enlarged with the premium models expected for September.
What devices are in the loop?
Today, many Apple devices are equipped with chips designed by TSMC. We can in particular cite the case ofiPhone 15 Proand iPhone 15 Pro Max, as well as their supposed successors.
But that's not all, since Apple's laptops and desktop computers have also all been equipped with proprietary processors, since the end of 2020. In any case, as far as models released after this date are concerned. Among these, we can notably cite the case of the MacBook Pro M3, theMac Studiolatest generation or even the most recent MacBook Air.
TSMC is not the only master on board
In all likelihood, TSMC is not the only company that will get its hands dirty with this German factory. Indeed, the Taiwanese company should have70 %, compared to 10% for each of the three other European founders who also joined the project.
The next processor that would be in the pipeline at TSMC, intended for iPhones, is the A18 Pro. The chip should be inserted under the hood of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, in particular to control the demanding operations powered by Apple Intelligence's AI. See you at thepotential keynote of September 10to try to find out more.
