The iPhone 16 is much more durable than the others, Apple explains why

During his“It’s Glowtime” conferenceApple was quick to mention the display's durability capability. On the iPhone 16, like many models in recent years, the Apple brand uses its “Ceramic Shield”, a glass shield designed to protect the screen.

During thepresentation of the new iPhone 16, Apple claimed that its “Ceramic Shield” was 50% “harder” than the first generation and “twice as strong” as the glass found in “all other smartphones”. A statement which did not fail to provoke a reaction. However, we will have to wait for the first tests to verify Apple's claims regarding this question of resistance.

Ceramic Shield: since iPhone 12

Apple launched its ceramic and glass-based screen protector with the iPhone 12 in 2020. At the time, Apple said that this solution was the productof a partnership with Corning. This company notably manufactures Gorilla glass, used by Apple and its competitors such as Samsung.

Regarding the iPhone 16, this second generation of Ceramic Shield was not presented as the result of this partnership. Here again you will have to wait to know the precise technical characteristics of the device to get an idea. Our colleagues at iFixit during their famous teardown of the iPhone 16 should be able to say with certainty whether this protective glass is indeed the result of a collaboration with Corning.

As a reminder, the iPhone 16 will be available from €969. Pre-orders open this Friday, September 13 and the first deliveries are scheduled for September 20. The iPhone 16 Plus is sold at €1,119. The iPhone 16 Pro is priced at €1,229 and the 16 Pro Max is priced at €1,479.
