Buying the iPhone 15 Pro requires a significant sacrifice

Recording of films in ProRes format is limited to 1080p (Full HD) definition at thirty frames per second, with the iPhone 15 Pro equipped with 128 GB of internal storage. This is the most affordable model. For comparison, the basic iPhone 15 Pro Max, which this time has 256 GB of memory, can run in ProRes with 4K definition and at sixty frames per second. The quality is therefore better than with the basic iPhone 15 Pro.

We don't know exactly why Apple chose to differentiate the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max in this way. However, it is a safe bet that it is precisely a question of space. Indeed, 4K videos in ProRes are particularly large. It is therefore possible that with a 128 GB iPhone 15 Pro and a few apps already installed on the device, the filming will stop unexpectedly if there is no more memory. With 256 GB, on the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro Max offers more margin to users.

For example, a 4K ProRes video just one minute long can take up no less than six gigabytes of memory, on average.

There is a trick to fix this

The good news is that Apple also specifies that an alternative still allows you to shoot in ProRes 4K at sixty frames per second with the 128 GB iPhone 15 Pro. All you need to do is connect an external storage accessory to the USB-C connector. Then, the file can be stored on this device and therefore does not risk taking up the memory of the iPhone 15 Pro.

For the moment, we do not yet know if keys or hard drives connected via wireless networks are also compatible. But the universal port of the new iPhone 15 Pro is relatively efficient, with USB 3 on the menu. It's better than with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.

Using the iPhone, a real fashion

While all these figures may make purists smile, many clips shot by professionals have already been made using the iPhone “Pro” range. This is for example the case for the titleStupid Love, by Lady Gaga. This was in fact carried out withl’iPhone 11 Pro. At the time, the aircraft did not yet have a time-of-flight radar (LiDAR) on the back.

In short:

  • iPhone 15 Pro (128 GB) are limited to ProRes in 1080p at 30 frames per second
  • The iPhone 15 Pro Max is entitled to ProRes in 4K at 60 frames per second
  • The iPhone 15 Pro limit can be bypassed with an external storage device
