The Californian firm offers many services, one of them being the subscriptioniCloud+. This includes additional storage for iCloud and access to 4 features to improve your security and privacy on the internet:
- iCloud Private Relay
- Custom email domain
- HomeKit secure video for 1, 5 or as many cameras as you want (depending on the iCloud+ subscription purchased)
- Hide my email address
The latter allows the creation of email aliases. For example, with it you can provide a different email address for each service you are registered for. Each of these addresses created on the fly transmits the emails received to your main mailbox.
The advantages are then multiple:
- You do not expose your main email address and therefore limit the risk of hacking and spam
- You can easily deactivate an alias to no longer receive promotional emails from the associated service
- You can quickly create a temporary, single-use alias and then delete it after use
- If you start receiving unwanted emails, you can easily find out which service is in question and disable or delete the associated alias
Remember that you can access this service even with the cheapest iCloud+ subscription, at1 € per month.
This alias system is not new to the market, however. Other solutions exist among competitors, with approximately similar operation. Some players offer free offers, often with fewer adjustments, others may be more expensive, but part of a different and more ambitious approach.
So, if iCloud+ doesn't tempt you, for various reasons (financial for example), here are the alternatives to consider.
What alternatives to “Hide my email address”?
- SimpleLogin :French creation and recently acquired by ProtonMail, SimpleLogin offers more advanced features than iCloud+ in terms of aliases. But for a higher cost: €30 per year or €4 per month. There is still a free offer allowing the creation of 10 aliases
- Firefox Relay :works almost identically to “Hide my email address”, with a similar price (€12 per year or €1.99 per month). Firefox, however, promises the upcoming addition of an alias system for phone numbers
- Addy.io :very close to SimpleLogin in its operation, with several offers ranging from 0 to €4 per month. Free, unlike SimpleLogin however, there is no limit on the number of aliases that can be used (although there is a bandwidth cap)
- IronVest :here is one of the most complete services in this panel to date and also one of the most generous for the free offer. Without paying a cent, you can create an unlimited number of aliases, without bandwidth caps.
- DuckDuckGo Email Protection :DuckDuckGo offers its alias service completely free. This allows the creation of *@duck.com addresses in unlimited numbers and without bandwidth cap. Simply, to access the service, at least the first time, you must either go through the DuckDuckGo browser (available on iOSand macOS), or by the Firefox/Chrome/Safari DuckDuckGo extension
