Apple could launch an app called “Passwords” at the same time asiOS 18, during the Worldwide Developer Conference. In the language of Molière, the platform could take the name “Passwords”. This would be automatically installed on all iPhones that download the operating system update. For security, the data would be stored via the same process as that which runs theTrousseau iCloudaccessible from the Settings app. Today, this is the only alternative natively offered by Cupertino to be able to save your identifiers online. But its interface turns out to be much less practical thana real dedicated password manager, from our own experience.
To be clear, the appointment is set forJune 10next. It is this day that Apple is expected to unveil iOS 18, during the opening keynote of WWDC, scheduled for 7 p.m. (Paris time). The update should also give pride of place to artificial intelligence, in all likelihood.
Last year, by presenting iOS 17, Apple also allowed us to discover a new app. It was then a matter ofJournal, sort of diaryfeaturing integrations with many other platforms like Photos and Apple Music. A year later, Freeform arrived on iPhone and Mac to allow us to carry out brainstorming sessions. We don't know if the publisher plans to continue this pace of one new iOS app per year, but it would be welcome.
What will be the features of “Passwords” with iOS 18?
If recent rumors are to be believed, the new “Passwords” app should take over the features of theTrousseau iCloudalready available for free on iPhone. Apple would also like its platform to run under visionOS, the operating system for the Apple Vision Pro, and under Windows, which equips millions of computers competing with Macs. Furthermore, theidentification keyswhich are now supported by many password managers would also be integrated into that of Cupertino. We can also assume that end-to-end encryption will be included, given the Apple firm's appetite for this effective encryption method.
“Passwords” will undoubtedly also be equipped with the same synchronization possibilities as theTrousseau iCloud. In other words, when an identifier is modified or added to the list from one device, then the change would also be taken into account on the versions of the app installed on other devices. For example, entering bank details on iPhone would also make them accessible on Mac or iPad.
Those who do not have the option of installing iOS 18, for example because their iPhone is not compatible, should continue to be able to use theTrousseau iCloud. For others, it seems that “Passwords” will definitely replace this solution, overshadowing Dashlane or Proton's password manager on Mac,just launched.
WWDC: request the program
The Worldwide Developer Conference therefore begins with its opening keynote on June 10, a presentation also dedicated to the general public where we should notably discover “Passwords” in images. A little later in the evening, Apple is also organizing the “Platforms State of the Union” conference. This time, the event is primarily aimed at app creators. This is therefore when they should learn more about how to integrate their platforms with “Passwords” and the other new features previously announced by Apple.
To go further, additional video “sessions” will go into detail by directly discussing the different scores to know, throughout WWDC until June 14. THEdevelopersare also invited to meet Apple employees to ask them questions during the American show.
