“Access codes” becomes “identification keys”: list of compatible sites

It is not uncommon to see Apple change its nomenclature to make it easier for users to understand. During the last Worldwide Developer Conference, the brand presented a feature calledaccess codes(Passkeysin original version) which aimed to offer a methodmore secure than traditional passwords or two-factor authenticationto connect. The problem is that “passcode” is also the name given to the code that you type on the iPhone to unlock it. It was therefore necessary to remedy this.

By consulting the official Apple documentation, we see that theaccess codesare now calledidentification keys. However, this should not change anything in the connection process via the iPhone, which continues to capitalize on a flashcode. All with a processend-to-end encrypted viaTrousseau iCloud, as explained by the developer.

A site lists several dozen eligible apps

For the moment, sites that have updated their code to integrate theidentification keysare not yet very numerous. But a brand new directory has just emerged, where all the addresses in question are listed:Passkeys.directory. For example, we discover the 1Password password manager, who had announced that he was getting up to speed a few weeks earlier.

Nothing about its main competitor though; Dashlane. The service isyet compatible, he too. But in fact, it turns out that Passkeys.directory is a collaborative site. Everyone can add their own find by clicking on the blue button “Contribute” at the top right of the list. 1Password being the owner of this page, this is perhaps also the reason why Dashlane does not appear there yet…

How to make your app compatible withidentification keys?

If you are a developer, know that Apple also offersa complete fileto help you modify your app to integrate itsidentification keys. You will also find code models to test and explanatory videos.

THEidentification keyswork on iPhone and Mac and allow users to generate private keys that are not originallyonly stored locally. When this is done, it is then possible to share them via AirDrop to another Internet user. Devices running tvOS 16 or macOS Ventura are also eligible.
