In June 2020, during its WWDC conference, Apple announced the switch of its Macs from Intel processors to Apple Silicon chips based on Arm technologies. This change allows Apple to offer more efficient machines and improve energy efficiency for laptops.
The expected duration of this transition is two years, and Apple is expected to replace all of its older models with Intel chips with new computers using Apple Silicon chips. However, according to an article published by Bloomberg in January 2021, the Cupertino company would have some difficulty in completely divorcing Intel.
Apple is considering launching a new Mac Pro with an Intel processor
While this transition is almost complete today, Apple could still release a computer with an Intel processor in 2022. According to the article, the Cupertino company is considering releasing two Mac Pros.
According to Bloomberg's sources, the first version would be an improvement on the current Mac Pro, released in 2019. And the firm would consider equipping this computer with an Intel processor. For its part, the second version would have more new features in terms of design, and would have an Apple Silicon chip.
An Intel Xeon Scalable processor?
If this rumor dates back several months, according to an article published this week on the MacRumours site, it is still current. The site even indicates that this new Mac Pro should use an Intel Xeon Scalable processor which, according to Intel has“built-in performance, security, efficiency, and AI acceleration to handle IoT workloads and more powerful AI.”
Today, Apple Silicon chips completely rival Intel processors for computers. However, according to the opinion of MacRumours, Apple is not yet completely confident in completing the transition to Mac Pros, a product used by professionals such as animators, photographers, or even Hollywood videographers.
Rosetta 2 would not necessarily satisfy the needs of professionals
For the moment, of course, the information should still be considered with caution. However, it is possible that Apple will continue to release a Mac Pro with an Intel processor because of the applications.
Mac M1, M1 Pro or M1 Max use a different architecture. And to make the transition easy for users, Apple has developed Rosetta 2. This technology makes it possible to translate apps developed for Intel processors onto machines using Apple Silicon chips.
For most MacBook Air users,MacBook ProetiMac, this solution seems to resolve all compatibility issues. But when it comes to Mac Pro uses, Apple may have felt that Rosetta 2 can't solve all the problems.
