Apple guarantees privacy with its COVID-19 app

The epidemic ofCOVID-19is starting to slow down, but initiatives to combat the phenomenon continue to multiply. Rightly so: the melting of permafrost, a consequence of global warming, risks spreading a number of new age-old viruses against which we are no longer immune, indicates the CNRS. Having learned from our past mistakes could therefore be an opportunity for future generations.

Among the propagation vectors, we find above all thecontaminationinvoluntary between individuals, which could be addressed by a solution using the GPS and Bluetooth of our smartphones. IfApple and Google will jointly develop a similar application, respect for user privacy is a major concern to which onlya non-governmental and non-profit projectseems seriously responding at the moment.

True to its positioning

But before designing this app, which is not yet available, Apple had already set foot in the field ofhealthduring this period of crisis. Indeed, the firm has already put a service online, accessible from a browser or the App Store, to find out about the coronavirus. And since its launch, the program has rightly raised questions from legislators. The American Senate would thus have communicated directly with Tim Cook, expressing reservations regarding thesecurityimplemented to protect Internet users visiting the software.

However, according to Apple, it's simple:no personal data would be collectedon occasion. However, anonymous analytical information is well saved, such as the number of times the integrated screening tool has been requested. However, by combining such figures with other indices such as iPhone models or geolocation, it would be entirely possible to monetize the data, for example to sell it to insurance companies.

But the editor seems to put an end to the hypotheses, sayingnot to resellwhat it records. Which fits with its privacy policy, although this may hide an anti-competitive strategy.
