In recent days, the Beeper Mini application has been in the news. She successfully sent false credentials to Apple's servers, making an Android smartphone appear to be a genuine Apple device. Thanks to this digital smoke screen,Beeper Mini offered its users to send “blue bubbles”from their smartphone.
But it didn't take long for Apple to react. The Apple brand announced this Monday that it had closed this “type of service” for reasons of “data security and protection of the privacy” of users. According to the Apple brand, the fact that Beeper Mini managed to infiltrate Apple's ecosystem in this way presented risks for users. In particular, they could have been victims of spam or phishing.
Beeper Mini says it is ready to fight back
Although silenced by Apple's striking power, the Beeper Mini application has not said its last word. Indeed, the boss of the latter, Eric Migicovsky, says he is ready to discuss with Apple to resolve all possible security problems with his service.
However, he believes that his offer presented no danger for users, even arguing that Beeper Mini was an added value for Android users. Indeed, and for the first time, they could communicate with users on iPhone using an encrypted messaging system. It was therefore impossible for a third party to spy on a conversation, which could have been the case with SMS messages normally used between iPhones and Androids.
Pressure mounts around Apple
By closing its ecosystem in on itself again, Apple is alienating new people. Already in the sights of European justice, iMessage could well be forced to open up to competition in the coming months. A report is expected in Brussels on the fate of the Apple messaging service.
If the latter were to be defined as“compliant with DMA rules”, Apple should then open the floodgates, letting third-party systems like Google's RCS enter the iPhone. Other solutions like Beeper Mini would then be authorized and protected by European law, allowing the emergence of competition with iMessage under iOS.
