Among the possibilities offered byCupertino's new AI brand, Apple Intelligence, we find the generation of images. The feature has already been offered by the competition for a while, which means that Apple had to think about a strategy in order to stand out from the others.

As a reminder, no one has yet been able to try Apple's image generation. The feature is part of the Apple Intelligence suite, which is not available in the first beta of iOS 18, but should be available in an upcoming beta this fall. It is also rumored thatit will be necessary to be registered on the waiting list to benefit from it.
Regardless, users who want to generate static content with Apple Intelligence have several options. There is the possibility ofcreate your own emoji using Genmoji, or transform a rough sketch into a polished image in Notes, using Image Wand.
The last feature is called Image Playground. The latter is the one that is closest to the image generators that we already know, but with some differences. Apple would of course not have been satisfied with the same thing as the others.
Images generated with Playground will be tagged
As a reminder, Image Playground is an AI generator thatallows users to create images in different styles, such as animation, illustration and drawing. Where Apple stands out is by offering you a different creative experience. While usually, you have to send a specific textual request to the generator, in Image Playground, Apple makes it easier by offering you several options interactively. As Apple said during the presentation “no need to design the perfect prompt.” Here is how the firm presents the functionality:
«Image Playground lets you create fun images in seconds by choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration and Sketch. Image Playground is an easy-to-use feature that's built right into apps like Messages. It's also available in a dedicated app, which is ideal for testing different styles and concepts. All images are created on-device, giving users the freedom to experiment with as many images as they want.»
Demonstration:
The lines of code found in the first beta of iOS 18 also show that the functionality is already integrated into iOS 18, as spotted by 9to5Mac. Image Playground is not active there, however, but the lines of code concerning it reveal some new information about it.
First of all, the tagging of image metadata announced by Craig Federighi following WWDC is confirmed. This means that all images generated by Playground will be identifiable and marked as being created by Apple Intelligence.
A paid subscription?
Beyond the markup, the code appears to show that Apple is considering paid options for its AI. During WWDC, the firm confirmed that the AI functionalities would be free, and did not mention paid options. We will see what the future holds for us in this regard. To conclude, let us recall thatImage Playground will only be able to generate caricatured images, and not realistic images, in order to avoid any abuse.
