Apple Podcasts could offer a paid offer tomorrow

Peter Kafka, journalist at the magazineVox, has just hypothesized that Apple plans to present a paid subscription to audio broadcasts during itskeynotefrom April 20. Which is not very surprising:We were already talking about it just a few days ago, and the company is already present in the market for streaming series and albums, the operation of which is very similar.

The rumor seems all the more true because if we look at the most recent beta version of iOS 14.5, to which we have access, the notifications icon which was at the top right of the Podcasts app has been replaced speakmenuAccount. This is where the different payment methods and packages are managed in the Apple TV application, whose interface is exactly the same. As you can see on the front page of this article, the change is also visible in France.

What prices can we expect?

One of the first questions that arises when we look at the subject of paid podcasts is obviously that which concerns the potential price of such an offer. Let's compare the figures used by other platforms, including the competition, to get an idea:

  • $4.99 per month for Wondery+(bought by Amazon) – or $34.99 per year
  • 9.95 euros per month for Audible books
  • 4.99 euros per month for Apple TV+
  • 9.99 euros per month for Spotify or Apple Music
  • 4.99 euros per month for Appple Arcade (video games)
  • $9.99 per month for Apple News+ and Fitness+, not yet available in France

Based on this data, we can therefore estimate that the price of an Apple Podcasts package - if it actually sees the light of day - would be aroundbetween five and ten eurosper month. The lower range being the most probable, because this format still remains one of the least popular in favor of video and music.

Let's finish by adding that it is also entirely possible that Apple One subscriptions will be modified to include this new service. However, as is often the case, France may not be entitled to it straight away: translation takes time, and what's more, it is rarely offered for this type of content.
