The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max were launched in September 2023, offering the ability to film space videos. This is a mode that allows you to capture three-dimensional videos, which can then be viewed immersively on Apple Vision Pro,or even on other virtual/mixed reality headsets.

This feature is made possible by using two lenses simultaneously instead of just one. When it launched, the iPhone 15 Pro models came with iOS 17, which limited the possibilities when it came to spatial video capture. The feature was only really introduced with iOS 17.2, but Apple did not offer it to developers in the App Store.
The only ways to capture spatial video are either through the iPhone's native camera or by relying on a third-party application. Since Apple didn't release an API to developers in iOS 17, the few apps that are able to offer spatial recording had to develop the feature on their own.Spatialify allows, for example, to film spatial videos in 4K, with sixty frames per second, while Apple's native app is limited to 1080 p, SDR, and 30 frames per second.
Apple releases API for spatial video
During WWDC 2024, the Apple firm announced the publication ofa new API that developers can integrate into their applications. It allows them to offer 3D spatial video capture functionality easily to their users, taking advantage of Apple's know-how. Thanks to this initiative, many applications in the App Store will undoubtedly offer it in iOS 18.
Space videos can be viewed in 2D on iPhone, but to fully experience the immersive depth of field in 3D, you need to own an Apple Vision Pro. As initially specified, it is also possible to view them on other virtual/mixed reality headsets, or even on other devices that support 3D, with some additional manipulations to be carried out, however.
As a reminder, spatial video is expected to be extended to the entire iPhone 16 lineup.
