Apple would work on a special App Store for Europe

It’s a real bombshell that Bloomberg and his journalist Mark Gurman have just dropped. Apple is reportedly preparing the ground for a third-party App Store, outside of Apple's control. This more than surprising choice can be explained by the legislative changes which could come into force in Europe by 2024.

In order to prepare as best as possible, Apple engineers are already working on the issue and thinking about the best solution for the company. For a few monthsseveral key features of the App Storehave been opened to third-party services. A dynamic that should continue in the coming months, with Apple continuing to work in this direction.

Europe dictates its law

The law on digital markets in Europe targets, without naming them, Apple and Google, the two tech news giants which have a clear monopoly on the distribution of applications on their devices. In its report on the subject, Bloomberg gives some details on the contours of this new ecosystem.

Apple would therefore be on the verge of opening a new App Store, without Apple exercising any control over it. The security standards requested by Apple for years risk being shattered, while what developers will be able to pay is a 30% commission taken by Apple for years.

Apple is preparing, reluctantly

The report ensures that the information is no longer a secret within the walls of Apple Park, and several senior executives of the Apple brand have been informed. Craig Federighi, Apple vice president and face of the brand at WWDC, and Eddy Cue are both aware of the big change in place.

According to testimonies collected internally by Bloomberg, Apple would put a lot of people on this new task to the point that this development center became the attraction of Apple Park. On the user side, the first changes should not be seen before iOS 17.

Apple is expected to announce the opening of third-party stores on iPhone and iPad during thesee you next WWDC in June. European law does not currently constrain Apple and the apple brand would also be ready to backtrack in the event of a surprise backpedaling on the Brussels side.
