In early November, Apple released the official trailer for a new Apple TV+ film, The Banker, starring Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Nia Long, and Nicholas Hoult.
The film was scheduled to be released on December 6 in theaters, and a few weeks later in January on Apple TV+. But the Cupertino company has postponed the cinema release and Apple TV+, because one of the protagonists of the film's story is in the heart of a sex scandal.
This film is based on a true story about the lives of Bernard Garrett (Mackie) and Joe Morris (Jackson), who hatch a plan to help African Americans become homeowners and obtain bank loans during the 60s.
Bernard Garret's son is accused by his two half-sisters of sexual abuse, which casts a chill over the film which is partly inspired by the life of the Garrett family. They also report inconsistencies in the film's story.
However, we imagine that Apple will not cancel the film, because the story mainly concerns Bernard Garrett, and not his son. A Hollywood lawyer suggests the film could be reclassified as “based on real facts“.
The Banker is Apple TV+'s third original film, following "The Elephant Queen" in October and "Hala" in November.
