Today we are entitled to two major new developments in the sphere ofApp Store emulators !
The first concerns RetroArch, which now offers an iOS application, but also and above alla tvOS application. This is a major new feature, since RetroArch is a cross-platform app, which offers access to a set of emulators.

The other news concernsPPSSPP emulator (PSP)which finally joins the App Store, despite some technical inconveniences initially mentioned, due to Apple policy.PPSSPP is also available in tvOS via RetroArch.
Old versions of Sonic or Super Mario on your Apple TV+
Since Apple accepts retro console emulators, users can play them on a large TV screen, provided they connect their iPhone or iPad with an HDMI cable. A maneuver which will no longer be necessary, thanks to RétroArch, whichlaunches an Apple TV application, alongside its iPhone app.
RétroArch is free and allows you to relive the experience of many retro consoles (dozens), including theSEGA, the NES, the SNES, the Virtual Boy, the Nintendo DS, but alsoseveral Playstation. The full list of consoles can be viewed in the descriptionApp Store.
Additionally, RetroArch offers advanced features, likesupport for in-game saves, hints, custom overlays, fast forward and rewind, and AI translations.
To add a little challenge and challenge, the app offers trophies, in partnership with RetroAchievements. They are available for the most popular games, like Super Mario or Sonic. The full list of games where you can win trophies is visibleici.

Despite the risk of reduced performance, PPSSPP joins the App Store
While its arrival was uncertain, the PPSSPP Application is finally available in the App Store, with a dedicated application on iOS. The PSP emulator is also entitled to tvOS integration, because it is available in RetroArch, which we have just presented. There are several important points to consider elsewhere, as the application arrives withunsupported features. The developer of PPSSPP specifies in acommuniquéabout it :
“This initial release of PPSSPP on the App Store has some limitations compared to previous unofficial releases:
- Vulkan support via MoltenVK is not yet enabled
- Magic Keyboard (iPad keyboard) is not supported
- JIT recompiler is not supported
- RetroAchievements is temporarily disabled”
To work correctly on Android, the less dated retro console emulators, such as the PSP, the WII, or the GameCube, use JIT technology.Apple nevertheless refuses to support it, which reduces in-game performance (we showed youan example of a game with/without JIT here).
The creator of PPSSPP further specifies that theMagic Keyboard and MoltenVK will be available soon, like RetroAchievement, but regarding JIT on the other hand:
the JIT compiler cannot be restored without changing Apple's rules. The loss of JIT is unfortunate since without it, our CPU emulation performance is reduced. Fortunately, iOS devices are generally fast enough to run almost any PSP game at full speed, because the PSP processor is not that expensive to emulate, thanks to our efficient IR-based caching interpreter, which can also be improved.
