Apple TV+ buys Will Smith's next film for $120 million

He was one of the headliners at the last Cannes film market. Due to the pandemic, the latter took place virtually via videoconference sessions. This did not prevent the studios from competing to obtain the rights toEmancipation, Antoine Fuqua's next feature film which will star Will Smith.

No less than seven offers were made, among them big names in cinema such as Warner Bros. But ultimately it was Apple TV+ which was the highest bidder by agreeing to invest $120 million. This is another very good move for the Cupertino company which does not hesitate to bet big on a film which should make people talk about it.

At the moment, we still don't know when filming will begin, but the script has already been finalized.Emancipationis based on the true story of a runaway slave during the Civil War. The latter tries to escape the capture promised to him in Louisiana. He headed north in hopes of joining the Union Army.

This agreement is only the latest for the streaming platform which has not hesitated lately to venture into the field of cinema to expand its catalog often criticized for its thinness. Apple notably concluded a deal with the aim of broadcasting the next film ofMartin Scorsese. This is an adaptation of the novelKillers of the Flower Moonsigned David Grann. This feature film will feature a five-star cast with the presence of Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert De Niro.

Apple TV+ also got its hands onGreyhound, Tom Hanks' latest film. The latter now has a release date and you will have to wait until July 10 to relive this great moment of the Second World War on screen.
