Apple Vision Pro: 4 points to remember about the headset following its launch

The Apple Vision Pro headset has been available on the market for a few days. We had time over the weekend, and even a little more given the early publication of the first impressions articles at the beginning of last week, to get somecomplete product returns. We also took the opportunity to investigate the technical sheet of the beast in more depth. If you read us regularly, you must be quite familiar with the headset by now. Let's take this opportunity to remind you of some important points about it and present to you some of its characteristics that you might have missed.

Apple Vision Pro: yes, it is indeed a virtual reality headset

Contrary to what Tim Cook wants to suggest, the Vision Pro is avirtual reality headsettechnically speaking. The reason is simple: at no time can the wearer see what is happening around him with his eyes. It was quite vague until then, but the feedback from the first buyers made it clear: when you wear the headset, you see the environment around you filmed and transcribed on the internal screen of the Vision Pro. This also involves a latency time (minimal, but present), as well as some display bugs sometimes. But above all this configuration raises many questions, notably several linked to the use of this data captured by the helmet cameras.

Many developers still reluctant

The success of the iPhone is notably due to the number and quality of applications available on the App Store. The iPhone certainly doesn't shine thanks to native applications, certainly functional, but very basic and sometimes even full of bugs.

For Vision Pro, several major developers have already announced that they do not want to offer a native VisionOS app, in the short term at least. For example, don't plan to use Spotify, Netflix or YouTube on the headset natively.

Apple must therefore be careful and take care of third-party developers a little more. Because the Vision Pro can enter a vicious circle: an insufficiently stocked VisionOS App Store can reduce the general public's interest in the headset, which can then cause developers to lose interest in the new platform. And so on.

Availability in Europe: a total unknown

Currently, the Apple Vision Pro headset is only available in the United States. Apple has not yet communicated either the price in euros or a release date on the old continent. According to recent information, the machine could arrive in 2024 in France. But be careful, you'll have to hold on,the price with us could reach €4,100.

A technical sheet far from perfect

Several technical characteristics of the Vision Pro appear to us at the momentvery limiting:

  • Weight :the headset weighs between 600 and 650 g, the external external battery around 350 g. The first feedback is clear, in the figure, the helmet is heavy, especially since the majority of the mass is felt towards the front. Difficult to last an hour in these conditions without starting to feel discomfort
  • Autonomy:Apple promises 2 hours of battery life and possible use of the headset even when the battery is charging. So yes, you can walk with the Vision Pro on your head in the street, as some early buyers have shown since Friday on social networks, but the experience seems far from practical to us with this operating time on battery
  • Operating temperatures:Apple indicates a very limited recommended use temperature range (0 to 30°C). The iPhone 15 Pro and MacBook Air can reach 35°C for example. This is a significant margin of 5°. 30°C seems to us to be a very low limit, at a time when the planet is warming up and the last summers in Europe have far exceeded this figure. Taking into account the weight and autonomy, the helmet obviously does not seem at all designed for the outdoors.

In short, this Apple Vision Pro questions some of these characteristics. It is still early to say whether it will be a success or not. Still, as it stands, by bringing together all the elements at our disposal, the product gives us mixed impressions.

In any case, we can't wait to test it! And you ?
