Beeper mini recently found a way toconnect Android to iMessage«in a secure manner", by passing off Android users as iPhones in Apple's servers. To achieve this, the development teamBeeper Mini used reverse engineering.
Shortly after, the apple company reacted andprevented Beeper Mini from connecting to its servers in this way.Considering this a violation of its services and security measures.
Apple stated that the way in whichBeeper Miniconnects to its services«presented significant risks to user security and privacy, including the potential for metadata exposure and enabling spam, spam, and phishing attacks».
For his part,Eric Migicovsky, the co-founder ofBeeper, denies these allegations and asserts that there is no risk for users. Adding on the contrary that the method reinforces the security of all parties, thanks to end-to-end encryption. In an interview given toCBS News, the CEO ofBeeperdeclared«that it was just trying to provide a secure service to Android users», and he decried Apple's monopoly on iMessage.
Of course, Apple does not agree with this, and even if the maneuver does not involve any risk, the way in whichBeeperoperated is indeed not the most honorable.
It is true that, even ifBeeperhad requested authorization from Apple, the firm would probably have refused given its usual policy on the subject.Beeperstill offers a way to connect to iMessage viaAndroid, but it is much less secure and more restrictive to implement. Especially sinceApple also seems to want to put an end to it.
Worried senators
Following the recent measures taken by the Apple firm concerningBeeper Mini, American senators reacted. The latter say they are worried about competition, interoperability, and the interconnection of services. They reported their concerns to the assistant prosecutorJonathan Kanterin a letter, calling on him to open an investigation into the affair between Beeper and Apple.
