The gold Apple Watch was a real flop

The American newspaper Bloomberg recently took an interest in the character of Jeff Williams, the second most important personwithin Apple after Tim Cook, and who could succeed the latter when he leaves.

The Bloomberg article on the subject provides interesting information on the beginnings of the Apple Watch and in particular the commercial failure that the 18-carat gold Apple Watch was.

We learned that several months before the launch of the Apple Watch in 2015, some Apple employees who were testing the first model began to have allergic reactions to the type of nickel that was used in the composition of the case.

Jeff William then made the decision to throw away the thousands of Apple Watches that had already been produced and to start again with a new type of nickel that did not cause these allergic reactions or very little.

The Bloomberg report also mentions that employees noticed that corrosion could cause long-term failures in the Apple Watch's haptic engine. In this case, Jeff Williams gave several thousand of these Apple Watches to employees.

Finally regarding the Apple Watch in 18 carat gold, the Bloomberg article states according to their sources that only “a few tens of thousands of units” were sold. This edition of the Apple Watch was therefore a commercial flop, which Apple ended in September 2016, 16 months after its launch.

Those gold Apple Watch models that Jony Ive wanted to become a fashion accessory are now stuck in the past with watchOS 4 or older.
