Yesterday Apple's back-to-school conference took place, of which we have summarized all the announcementsin this article. This was dedicated to the new iPhone and the new Apple Watch. One of the most interesting new features of this event is undoubtedly the addition of an electrocardiogram function to the watch.
However, we learn that this functionality is initiallylimited to the United States. Additionally, for US users, it will not beactivated only later in the year. For what ?We explain the reasons to you.
As a reminder, the Apple Watch Series 4 allows you to perform an electrocardiogram directly on the wrist. This is made possible thanks to the electrodes integrated into the crown and the new electrical heart rate sensor.
To perform a measurement, the user must place a finger on the crown while wearing the watch on their wrist. The measurement is completed after 30 seconds. This allows the user to know if their heart is beating regularly or if it isshows signs of atrial fibrillation.
Atrial fibrillation is a heart disease that can lead to very serious medical complications.
But Apple mustobtain the green light from health authorities in each countryto activate this function. The deployment of this electrocardiogram functionality will therefore be gradual and on a case-by-case basis for each country.
In the United States, Apple's historic market, the Cupertino giant has obtained validation from the American FDA, the body which approves medical devices (but not only) in the US.
The Apple firm will have to obtain validation from the equivalent of the FDA in each country where it wishes to sell its watch and allow the use of this electrocardiogram function. This is a necessary procedure becauseit affects a critical area, that of health.
For the moment, the mention of electrocardiogram measurement with the Apple Watch Series 4 is only present on the American Apple website. For other countries, this functionality is missing from the list of features on the various Apple sites.
