Apple Watch Series 4 officially goes vintage: what it means

Apple presented it on September 12, 2018.L’Apple Watch Series 4is then the first watch to integrate the “fall detection” functionality. But its main addition is the presence of an electrocardiogram sensor offering the possibility of having precise monitoring of one's cardiac activity in real time.

It includes a larger screen, with thinner bezels. Delivered with WatchOS 5, it is the most advanced connected watch of its time. But more than six years later, the watch has nothing to do with current standards andit has just been classified as “vintage” by Apple.

A completely logical and automatic new classification, which nevertheless changes some details, in particular on the conditions of repair of the product. Concretely, if you still have an Apple Watch Series 4 on your wrist, you can still have it repaired in an Apple Store or in third-party stores, but only while stocks last.

Apple classifies all these products which have not been marketed for 5 years as “vintage”. After 7 years, they become “obsolete” and are no longer eligible for assistance. The Apple Watch Series 4 therefore lives its last two years as a “vintage” product before completely falling into the oblivion of technology.

Mythical products

In addition to the Apple Watch Series 4, particularly appreciated by users, other iconic products from the late 2010s appear on Apple's list of “vintage” products. This is particularly the case of the first HomePod or even the first AirPods but especially ofl’iPhone X.

The most innovative smartphone of its time, the one that introduced Face ID has become a “vintage” device in Apple's eyes. This is also the case for the 15-inch MacBook Pro, released in 2019. It was the last professional laptop with an Intel chip. The end of an era for Apple.
