After chips, Apple could make its own screens

Apple's business model relies heavily on its partners and other subcontractors. Apple works in particular with LG and Samsung for the screens of its iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. But according to the latest information from the Bloomberg agency, Apple could change its strategy soon. The Apple brand would indeed have plans to build its own screens.

The very first Apple screen should see the light of day with the Apple Watch Ultra in 2024. Internally the project has already received the support of Wei Chen, Apple's vice president in charge of display technologies.

An old project that is gaining momentum

According to Bloomberg, the project to launch its own screen is not new. Drafts have already seen the light of day in 2018. The initial objective was to launch the first “Apple” screen in 2020, but technical challenges and very high costs slowed down the project.

Bloomberg explains in his article that the pandemic almost put an end to this idea of an Apple screen. The objective stated internally is now to produce an Apple screen for 2024, but the schedule could be revised with a release of the component in 2025.

Apple: towards creating its own screen?

The creation of an Apple screen does not mean the arrival of an Apple factory. The Apple brand will continue to trust its subcontractors, but it will be at the origin of the screen manufacturing process.

This method is already used by Apple for the M series chips. They were thought and designed by Apple, but mass production is managed by the Taiwanese company TSMC. It should therefore be the same for the screens of the next Apple Watches.

Bloomberg mentions that producing an “Apple” screen for the iPhone is the ultimate goal of this project, but that it is not expected to see the light of day for several years. Apple's entry into the screen market is, however, a “big move” made by the Cupertino company.
