After USB-C, the EU bends Apple a second time

Is the European Union about to impose major changes for the Apple ecosystem? With its legislation requiring USB-C as a universal charging port, the EU has already forced Apple to abandon its proprietary Lightning technology. And with theDMA, the EU will force Apple to make significant changes to the iPhone.

On Android, users have the ability to install apps that do not come from the OS's official app store. On iOS this is impossible. But to comply with the DMA, Apple may be forced toput an end to its closed system.

Apple will lose revenue

And for the first time, the firm is speaking out on this subject, in an official document relayed by our colleagues at The Verge. In this document, Apple indicates that it expects to make changes to the App Store economic model in order to comply with new regulations, including the DMA in Europe.

“Changes include how developers communicate with consumers outside of the App Store regarding alternative purchasing mechanisms. Future changes could also affect what the Company charges developers for access to its platforms, as well as how it manages the distribution of applications outside of the App Store, and how and to what extent it allows developers to communicate with consumers within the App Store regarding alternative purchasing mechanisms”, we can read in this document.

For the moment, this is not an official announcement for the general public, but rather a document sent to the American authorities, with technical terms. But if Apple has to end the closed system of the iPhone, it will modify its system before March 2024. In any case, because of the changes it will make to comply with the DMA, Apple expects that There is a decline in App Store sales, and in the commissions that Apple takes on in-app purchases from iOS app users.

iMessage is also in the viewfinder

Furthermore, it is also possible that Apple will be forced to change the way iMessage works. Currently, the European Union is investigating whether the DMA should apply to this messaging service. If so, Apple would then be forced to make iMessage interoperable with other messaging services and with Android devices.

This would be a victory for Google, which has been campaigning for a while for iMessage to become interoperable with Android messaging. Moreover, according to the Financial Times, with a group of telephone operators, Google wrote to the European Commission to request the application of the DMA for iMessage.
