Beware of this dreaded ransomware that targets Macs

This is a warning sign to be taken seriously. Experts from the MalwareHunterTeam discovered this Sunday a sample of LockBit ransomware which would be intended for Macs running Apple Silicon. Called “locker_Apple_M1_64”, it is the first malware from this organization to target the latest generation Macs.

It is still too early to know the exact consequences of this revelation, but it is cause for concern. LockBit is indeed a gang of cybercriminals infamous for its attacks.

LockBit: a very serious threat

Worse, it provides access to its ransomware in exchange for money and this strain could therefore be used by other organizations around the world. We could therefore see more attacks targeting Apple's computer in the future. There is no doubt that the Apple teams are aware and are preparing to face the threat.

Finally, we can recall that LockBit is a group of cybercriminals believed to be linked to Russia. He became known for iconic attacks, notably against the Royal Mail (British postal service).

Another very inglorious feat of arms: an attack on a hospital for sick children in Canada. Faced with the outcry, LockBit finally apologized and provided a decryption tool.

In any case, the distribution of ransomware seems particularly lucrative and the figure of $100 million in revenue for LockBit via these cyberattacks is mentioned.

For your part, are you worried about the risks posed by this ransomware, or do you feel safer on Mac? Tell us in the comments.
