Music: a new record for streaming and vinyl

  • Vinyls exceed CD sales
  • Streaming remains number one for purchasing music
  • Apple Music is available from 10.99 euros per month (excluding Voice offer)

A new study from the Recording Industry Association of America takes stock of the music market in the United States for the year 2022. We learn that streaming generated no less than 84% of revenues, in pole position ahead of physical media and their 11%. And as far as records are concerned, it turns out thatvinyls have just overtaken CDswith forty-one million units sold over the period, compared to thirty-three million for compacts. This is a first since 1987, but the end-of-year holiday period in 2021 had already broken the record of that of 1991, with more than 50% of deliveries attributed to pancakes.

Thevinyl's comebackcan be explained in several ways, starting with increased confidence on the part of DJs, more and more of whom appreciate this format rather than playing on CDJ. With this, the general public seems to appreciate the large visuals of the covers as well as the ever more original design of the two-speed decks.

Users are still reluctant to pay

To go further, the study by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) also tells us that ifstreaming brought in $13.3 billionin 2022, or 8% more than the previous year, this is without taking into account the 108 billion dollars generated by subscriptions supported solely by advertising. These have existed for a long time on Deezer or Spotify, but are just starting to appear on Disney+ or Netflix. It is also rumored that Apple is also considering it toits video-on-demand platform, namely TV+, accessible today from 6.99 euros per month.

On the Spotify side, the base price is 9.99 euros per month for a single user, compared to now10.99 euros per month with Apple Music(excluding Voice offer). The two platforms offer relatively similar catalogs, with tens of millions of titles on each side of the scale.

A growing market

Still according to the RIAA, subscribers to streaming services like Apple Music or Deezer have seen their number increase by10%on average in 2022, reaching 92 million subscriptions compared to 84 million in 2021.

At Apple, the success of the offer could be explained in particular by regular promotion of the platform on Apple devices, both via Shazam and Apple One.
