Ferdous Saljooki and Jaron Bradley would have done without this discovery. The two cybersecurity researchers are investigating the computer security of Macs on behalf of Jamf Threat Lab. In particular, they discovered that a particular file, namedfseventsd, would actually be a computer virus.
To enter the Mac, the virus would be linked to an application. If the latter is downloaded, then the malware is in turn implanted in the computer. As the two researchers explain, Macs are very vulnerable to these attacks because they are the only devices in Apple's ecosystem to allow downloading.outside of the App Store.
Because it is by taking applications from the depths of the Web that Internet users put themselves in danger. While the list of “target” applications has not been fully made public, the two researchers confirmed that applications such as FinalShell, Microsoft Remote Desktop Client, Navicat Premium, SecureCRT and UltraEdit were affected.
Usually these apps downloaded illegally from third-party websites are paid apps that have been hacked. The problem is that hackers can very well introduce a file into all the data to be downloaded. The application will work perfectly, but secretly, a virus will be taking control of your machine.
A Chinese virus?
In their analysis published in a blog post at the beginning of the week, the two researchers believe that it is likely that this virus is content to target Chinese populations. It has in fact only been found on websites with a .cn extension characteristic of the Middle Kingdom.
As for the dangers posed by this particular file, researchers believe that it would be capable of downloading data about a user or even executing code on the infected machine. According to researchers, it could be a sequel to ZuRu, a malware that caused great damage a few months ago.
How to protect yourself?
To avoid being infested by this new computer threat, the best thing is to adopt the right reflexes. If zero risk does not exist, it is possible to reduce it drastically by having a few good habits. The first is to never download a pirated application.
They are the favorite lair of cybercriminals and viruses of all kinds. It is also recommendedto use an anti-virus. This solution helps protect your computer against external threats. Files likefseventsdwould be quickly spotted and destroyed, before they do any damage to your machine.
