Apple could fix the story to sell USB-C iPhones

Apple should, barring a huge surprise, present the iPhone 15with a USB-C charging port. This major change in the history of Apple, which has used Lightning cables for a decade, should be sold asa “victory for the consumer”by Tim Cook and his teams.

A beautiful rewriting of history. Indeed, the arrival of USB-C on the iPhoneis in no way an Apple choice. Conversely, the Apple brand tried by all means to have this change reversed. It is Europe and the policies of Brussels that have entered into a standoff with the Cupertino company.

USB-C, a victory for Brussels

As of January 1, 2024, all electronic devices marketed on the old continent will have to comply with new regulations. Among the required qualifications, the presence of a USB-C charging port is mandatory.

Europe thus hopes to be able to reduce the quantity of cables produced and in circulation on its territory. Today, cables are a considerable source of pollution in the electronics industry. By all using the same standard, consumers should be able to operate all their devices with one or two cables, instead of 5 or 6 as may be the case today.

Apple has a short memory

But during the discussion process of this text of law in Brussels, Apple went out of its way to undermine this project. The Cupertino company then called itself the defender of“freedom of innovation”. According to Apple the obligationto use a USB-C charging portgo put an end to cable improvements.

The Cupertino company is also losing a big market with the end of Lightning. This solution being the property of Apple, Apple was the only legitimate producer of cables for all the iPhones in the world. It could have found a solution in this area making USB-C cables from other brands unusable on iPhones.

If this is the case, European law will be useless and Brussels will surely take new measures to force Apple a little more to respect the European legal framework.
