Apple will allow users toremove the Safari app from iPhones in 2024. In a press release issued this weekend, the Apple brand explains that it is “already possible to remove pre-installed applications from their home screen on iOS”. The Cupertino company goes further by explaining thatcompletely removing an applicationreinstalled, like Safari, is possible by the end of the year.
Apple hasn't given much detail on the timing of these changes but the fact that this announcement is reserved for“the end of the year”indicates that the Apple brand should make possible the deletion of Safarinew in iOS 18.
The apple brand also explains in its press release that it will be possible for users“export and import browsing data into another browser on the same device”. For this new feature, Apple mentions the date of the end of the year 2024 or the beginning of the year 2025 not before.
Browsers are just the beginning
If the DMA will allow European users to choose a default internet browser, and therefore to remove solutions pre-installed by Apple, the Apple brand should also give control over other areas. Indeed, Apple explains in its speech that other star applications of the iPhone such as Apple Maps could also pay the price of these new competition rules.
Apple reportedly plans to launch an update in a year, in March 2025, allowing you to choose a third-party application as a default solution. Users will therefore be able to completely get rid ofd’Apple Plansfor the benefit of Google Maps if they wish.
In a final point mentioned today in its speech, Apple mentions loading data from an iPhone to transfer it to an Android device. If the process is quite complex today, it should be greatly simplified by the Cupertino company in the coming months. The objective here again is to give more freedom to the user.
