While Android smartphones costing less than 200 euros feature a screen with a refresh rate of 120 Hz,the basic iPhone 16 continues to offer 60 Hz. In fact, the Nothing brand released this summer anew affordable smartphone called “the Android iPhone”, which is low-cost only in price. The latter indeed offers a 120 Hz screen, 8 GB of RAM, and a 50 MP camera on the back.
Faced with the technical specifications of affordable Android phones which continue to grow in power over the years, many still wonder how Apple can offer iPhones at1000 euroswithout ProMotion. At the Apple firm, this functionality, which allows an adaptive screen refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, is in fact reserved for Pro models, hence its name.
Persistent rumors for the iPhone 17
For a while now, rumors of the arrival of the120 Hz panels across the entire iPhone 17 range. This rumor has just been corroborated by a new report from Korean media Digital Times. According to their sources, LG Display would consider increasing its production capacity for LTPO OLED panels to meet the anticipated increase in orders from Apple in 2025.
As a reminder, LTPO technology makes it possible to obtain higher and variable refresh rates compared to a classic OLED or LCD screen. On smartphones, these panels generally go up to 120 Hz. Apple calls them ProMotion and uses them on all its iPhone Pros since the iPhone 13 Pro.
Details remain to be clarified
It remains to be seen whether the base iPhone 17, the 17 Plus, and the supposed iPhone 17 Air will really benefit from ProMotion technology or will be satisfied with a fixed rate at 120 Hz. This second option would probably be less expensive, allowing us to keep a notable difference between pro and non-pro range, even if the new iPhone Airshould be positioned as a premium product.
