Apple's results for the third quarter of 2014: what to remember

It is with a regularity of
metronome imposed by the presence on the stock market that Apple communicates its results
each quarter. Last night, it was the third quarter of 2014 which was
the opportunity to learn more about sales trends.

Whether it concerns the iPhone, iPad or Macs, but also
acquisitions and other information delivered on this occasion, here is a
summary of what to remember from a quarter that precedes the most
important of the year, that of the releases of new products (iPhone, iPad) and
Christmas sales.

Let's get some numbers, but not too many, I promise:

Main figures

Before going into detail about the developments by product range, here is
the classics Turnover, profits, etc.

  • The turnover for the quarter amounts to42.1 billion
    dollars
    for a net profit of8.5 billion. A
clear growth if we compare to last year, over the same period for
which turnover stood at 37.5 billion dollars and profit at 7.5
    billion.
  • This quarter, the gross margin is 38% compared to 37% last year. A
figure which must make all the competitors in the field of
    hi-tech

Sales by product

In terms of revenue and sales segmentation, Apple shared
figures which show insolent health for the iPhone,
but also for the range of computersMac, displaying by
against onenegative trend which is confirmed on the shelves
iPad
, in a contextof
slowdown in tablet industry growth
.

  • 39,2 millions d’iPhonefound pockets for
welcome this quarter. Over one year, that’s 169.2 million iPhones sold,
compare to 150 million the previous year
  • 12.3 million iPads were sold, which is less than last year
the same time. The iPad nevertheless remains the holder ofchiffres records
    for Apple
and Tim Cook is confident the market will not be saturated
    according to his analysis.
  • sale of 5.5 million Macs in the last quarter: growing
in a contracting market. Result: this offers the best part of
market for Macs compared to the rest of PCs since… 1995!
  • and for the iPod, 2.6 million units were sold

This gives the following distribution for income:

And here is the evolution quarter by quarter:

In terms of units sold:

But still?

During the conference which followed the formal announcement of the figures, the
Apple executives return to a number of topics. Among these,
the launch and success of the iPhone 6 were discussed.

Tim Cook has explained at length thatdemand for iPhone 6 and
iPhone 6 Plus far exceeds production capacity
d’Apple
. All models manufactured are sold and this could last
several more weeks, perhaps even until the end of year holidays.

This confirms the information shared during the iPad conference of the
last week where the launch of the iPhone 6:6 Plus was presented as the
best iPhone launch ever at Apple.

Another subject on which Apple is always stingy with details,
acquisitions! On theLast 12 months, Apple acquired 20
companies
, of more or less large size, thatof Beats being the most
significant
, others still remaining unknown.
