Thunderclap on the App Store: purchases outside iOS will be authorized

The affair ofsideloadingfinally resolved? In a press release where the term is also revised in favor of that of “apps player“, Apple has just announced that service providers such as Netflix or Spotify will finally be able to override the 30% commission that was previously imposed on them on iPhone. However, it seems that other types of content, such as games, are not affected:the lawsuit against Epic Gamesshould therefore continue.

Among the categories concerned, however, are:

  • magazines
  • the newspapers
  • digital books
  • audio
  • music
  • the videos

To be eligible for this exemption, platforms must first have authorized the single purchase or subscription rental of this type of service. The security verification process for their updates will also be improved accordingly.

Japan, stronger than Europe?

This decision comes as part of an investigation by the JFTC (Japan Fair Trade Commission), the equivalent of our French financial markets authority in the land of the rising sun, as Apple recalls under the scope of this investigation. The firm had, however, spent 3.5 million euros on lobbying in Europe alone, where the organization with similar missions had also criticized its practices as uncompetitive. Even in the United States, legislators were following the same path.

With 47.3% mobile market share in Japan according to IDC, Apple is quite simply the most prolific manufacturer in the region. A reason which may have pushed it to comply with local requirements, such a segment probably representing several billion dollars in revenue for the company.

Ten-figure consequences

One might think that this change, which will affect publishers from the start of next year, will have only a negligible impact on in-app purchases. In fact, going through the developer's website takes more time, and Internet users often go as quickly as possible. However, as for the notification of the ATT - but whereThis is against App Store rules.– it is easy to get around this disadvantage by hiding it from interested parties before their choice. The studio behind Fortnite proved it before being banned:

It's hard to imagine apps doing without this stratagem, which could bring them additional revenue that won't end up in Apple's pockets. Everything therefore suggests that the sanctions to which Cupertino was exposed by continuing to impose its tax were so large that even such a staggering amount could not compete.
