We've known for a while that Apple is interested in electric cars. At the moment, we do not yet know when this project will finally be made official. Akira Yoshino, the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, thinks that the Cupertino company could make an announcement before the end of the year.
This is what he recently indicated in an interview with Reuters. According to Yoshiro, Apple is a company to watch closely, as the firm is expected to announce something soon. Indeed, the Nobel Prize winner thinks that the Cupertino firm is aiming to enter the market in 2025. And for this, it should make an announcement before the end of the year.
Of course, this is simply a prediction. And in the interview, Akira Yoshiro specifies that this is just his “personal hypothesis”. As a reminder, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry thanks to his work on lithium-ion batteries.
In any case, while Apple does not yet offer electric cars, one of its future competitors, Tesla, already seems to be on guard. In July, Elon Musk made some hostile comments about Apple.
When asked about the compatibility of Tesla chargers with other brands, he criticized Apple's closed system. Musk also criticized the use of cobalt in the Cupertino company's products.
“Apple uses, I think, almost 100% cobalt in its batteries, cell phones and laptops, but Tesla uses no cobalt in iron phosphate packs, and almost none in nickel chemicals »,declared the boss of Tesla.“On a weighted average basis, we could use 2% cobalt compared to, say, Apple's 100% cobalt. Either way, it's really not a factor. »
In 2015, Elon Musk had already indicated that Apple is Tesla's graveyard, referring to former employees of his company who were recruited by Apple as part of its electric car project.“If you don’t succeed at Tesla, you’re going to work at Apple,”he had said.
