Difficult Indian market for Apple: the iPhone stuck in an ultra-luxury segment

After China, India is the world's largest market in terms of population, with more than 1.3 billion people. Smartphone manufacturers are trying to find a place in the country, including Apple.

However, the Cupertino company is experiencing many problems with the Indian market and in particular a continued decline in iPhone sales. A new report from the Wall Street Journal looks atApple's situation in India. And she is notnot shiny.

Among those interviewed in India, Rajput, who runs an iPhone sales counter, says he is “lucky” when he manages to sell at least1 iPhone per day. At the same time, sales counters for other brands like Samsung, Oppo and Nokia, sell ten times moredevices per day.

This was not always the case. In 2013, Rajput was selling up to 80 iPhones per day. But today it is rare for an Indian consumer to spendmore than 300 dollars for a smartphone.

However, the current range of iPhones offered by Apple is notnot suitable for the Indian market. There is no more iPhone SE. And the cheapest of the new iPhones, the XR model, is far from the price of an entry-level model. However, this is what Indian users are looking for.

Even though Apple sells older models at a reduced price, it seems that this is not enough to please Indian users. They want a recent device, butat a more affordable pricethan the prices charged by Apple.

As is the case in China, Indian users change SIM cards very frequently and often use two SIM cards to have two data plans. This makes the dual-SIM feature very important for these markets.

Apple was a late adopter of this dual SIM functionality. It is only present in the latest models of 2018. The Cupertino company still needs to offer an entry/mid-range model with this dual SIM to hope to attract Indian users.

Various reports and signs suggest that iPhone sales are starting to stagnate. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects a drop in iPhone sales in 2019, due to a mixed reception of the iPhone XR by users.
