Apple Watch: Apple is working on micro-LED for its next watch

Depending on its devices, Apple uses several types of screens based on different technologies. For example, the iPad mini, iPhone SE and Apple Watch Series 3, 5 and 6 are equipped with an LCD screen. While all iPhones since the X (except the XR and 11) are equipped with OLED screens, just like the Watch Ultra 2.

Even if these are the main ones, the Apple firm does not only use these two technologies for its screens. Indeed, several of its devices are equipped with Mini-LED technology, namely the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2021) and the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021). Butsince 2018, the company is developing what could be described as a successor to the mini-LED:le micro-LED.

An Apple Watch Ultra as a guinea pig

The first device to feature it should be an Apple Watch Ultra. We had already mentioned it here last March, during aDigiTimes report on the subject. In the latter, it was said that micro-LED Apple Watches could appear on the market at the end of 2024. The rumor was recently confirmed byHaitong Tech analyst Jeff Pu, but the latter rather relies ona release for the end of 2025.

Advantages of micro-LED technology

Apple seems to have high hopes for this technology. And for good reason, the company has even built a secret factory housing more than 300 engineers whose sole purpose is to develop micro-LEDs. But it's not for nothing given what this type of screen offers. Micro-LED allows you to benefit from the strong points of OLED without suffering from its weak points.

Here are some advantages of micro-LED:

  • Higher brightness
  • Higher contrast
  • Longer lifespan
  • Wider viewing angle
  • Sharper image
  • Lower power consumption compared to OLED

Even if the cost of this technology is very high, the performance gains are not negligible. Apple seems to have understood this and who knows, maybe in the long term these screens will come back to itcheaper than buying from Samsung and LG.
