Europe: a common charging socket for all devices… But not right away

If there is a point that differentiates
electronic equipment manufacturers, it is the use of ports more or
less proprietary involving the use of different cables for the
users.

Apple has for the first time modified its sync/charging socket to switch
from bulky 30 pins to very smallLightning
last year. This was not without consequences for prop makers and
users who have seen old brackets and other accessories become
obsolete, this even if Apple offers a
Lightning to Micro USB adapter
.

Today, it is the European Union which intends to impose a standard in order to
that everyone uses the same charging socket format, to facilitate
the lives of users:

In
Indeed, a bill is in progress and should be voted on in March 2014.
This would impose the same standard for device connectivity for everyone
manufacturers, which obviously would complicate Apple's life.

However, we should not expect to see a sudden change
shortly. First of all, this law must be adopted by each member state
in the following year. Then, a period of 1 year is given to the manufacturers
in order to adapt to this standard, which means that it will be necessary to wait at least
2017 for it to be effective.

Another point to consider is a new USB Type-C connector
is currently under development and should be finalized by summer 2014. This
new socket will be smaller, thinner andreversiblepour
be connected indifferently in one direction or the other, a bit like
Apple's Lightning port. Could this proximity allow
Apple to influence the development of the future connector in order to make it
compatible with his solution? Not sure if Apple itself wants it

We remember that Apple has nevertheless already succeeded inimpose the Nano-SIM standard a few years ago
month
, except that it remains a simple passive drawer format, far from the
commercial issues of a deployed charging socket and data exchange
by all brands.

It remains to be seen whether Apple, like other manufacturers, will have
the obligation to modify its port (if it is incompatible) or if the proposal
of aadapter like Lightning to Micro USB
on sale here for €19
will be enough to be on target.

Matter to be continued, but undoubtedly, a unified solution would be
desirable to avoid the accumulation of incompatible cables and chargers
with the waste and additional costs that this generates. Let's dream a little... but
not too much or too quickly.
