Face ID could work with mask wearing, but…

In an interview with German mediaStern, Tim Millet, Apple vice president of platform architecture, spoke onHow Face ID works when users wear the mask.

And for good reason, the subject has been discussed for several months already since many users are obliged to wear one, whether in public or professional places. Except that it is difficult to use facial recognition technology when the face is almost entirely covered by a mask. Many people now use the traditional code, a technique that takes a little more time — especially when you use your phone a lot during the day.

Less security for Face ID?

During the interview, Tim Millet indicated that Face ID could work well even if the user is wearing a mask, except that this would impact the security of the devices.

He states on this subject: “It's hard to see something you can't see. Facial recognition models are really good, but it's a tricky problem. Users want convenience, but they also want to be secure. And at Apple, it's all about making sure data stays secure.

We can think of techniques that do not involve the part of the face that is covered by the nose and mouth guard. But then you lose some of the features that make your face unique, making it easier to imagine that someone could unlock the phone».

This is obviously problematic, because biometric unlocking solutions are supposed to be more secure than a simple code or password. Making these services less reliable would go against their initial objective.
