4 years after Covid-19, digital identity is gaining ground in France

Long a source of controversy, the applicationFrance Identityparty todaythe million users, in just five months. As a reminder, this is an application developed by the French government, which was officially released about six months ago, on February 14, 2024.

Before that, it had been in beta since November 2022, which gave the government developer time to fix bugs, fill flaws and thus improve the user experience.

Services offered

The application offers a variety of very practical services, such asdematerialization of the identity cardand driving license. Unlike a photo of your document, the France Identity application accesses the NFC chip, which makes it a valid proof of identity. This allows you to use the applicationto check your identity on the train, for example.

Another service that should be widely used in the future is the ability to create completely dematerialized voting proxies. This is particularly useful during this election period which takes place in the middle of summer. Our less mobile elders will be able to count on France Identity and a loved one to vote on their behalf.

Less conspiracy about it?

Digital identity was the source of numerous controversies during the coronavirus period, fueled by conspiracy theories. The most widely relayed is that the confinements were intended to exercise mass control over populations. Ultimately, the outcome would have been digital identity and mandatory tracking for all, with a Chinese-style social credit score.

Four years later, none of this has happened, and any measure resembling Chinese social credit isformally prohibited in the European Union.
