Surprise ! Apple reveals iOS 16.5 release date

  • watchOS 9.5 and iOS 16.5 will be released next week at the latest, in final version
  • No big changes expected
  • iOS 16.5 is already available in beta

May 18 update: iOS 16.5 is availableas announced there, with the update procedure described in this same article.

It is by consulting the recentannouncementof the new Apple Watch Pride Edition that we noticed it. The release date ofiOS 16.5was specified by Apple, which wanted in this way to indicate which version is necessary to install its new dial in the colors of the rainbow flag. The future Apple operating system will arrive like thisnext week at the latest. We don't know more at the moment, but we do know that the publisher generally tends to publish its updates on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Apple also adds thatwatchOS 9.5will be released at the same time, which is not surprising since smartwatch software is often associated with the improvement schedule of its iPhone equivalent. It's impossible to know what features are in the works, but don't expect any major changes. In fact, it is rather during WWDC that these are to be expected.

One last round and then iOS 17

iOS 16.5, currently available in beta version only with theRCshared last night, could well be the very last edition before the arrival of iOS 17. It is thus during the Worldwide Developer Conference which begins on June 5 that the new major update is expected. Only app creators should be able to test it first, for several weeks.

Ditto for watchOS 10, tvOS 17 or even iPadOS 17. During the event, Macs will probably not be left out. Beyond new models, their manufacturer should also present the platform that will succeed macOS Ventura.

The end of the Apple Watch Series 4?

Often, a new major update also means abandoning support for old devices at Apple. The Apple Watch Series 4, currently compatible with watchOS 9, could therefore well be left aside with the arrival of the next version. It must be said that the watch still dates from2018, which is starting to happen.

For theiPhone, however, don't panic. Indeed, everything suggests that all models which are already compatible with iOS 16 will also be compatible with iOS 17. But of course, as is often the case with this kind of rumor, caution remains in order: only the developer will be able to confirm this to us. .
