If Tesla and Uber continue to monopolize the top of the basket of the most innovative companies in the automobile sector, the two giants could soon have to cede some market share to Apple. Analysts thus believe that the firm's (no longer really) secret autonomous car projectcould very quickly conquer fifty billion dollars, then exceeding the turnover currently generated by revenues from Macs, wearables and iPads combined.
Despite everything, this equation still mainly consists of major unknowns that the Cupertino company is far from revealing. In an interview with theWall Street Journal(News Corp), Peter Fintl believes that although Apple's movements within the production chain ecosystem are now obvious, no one knows the ins and outs. So much so that it could even just be the ambitions of a software subsidiary.
A platform for developers?
Working within the German offices of the French company Capgemini, the executive ensures that there is nothing to date to prove that a vehicle is indeed in the boxes. Which echoes thevagueness regarding the potential service provider responsible for manufacturing itthus allows it to rely on a service, the details of which would also always be opaque.
If it were to see the light of day, this program could then be adapted to provide the different brands with an OS much more efficient than CarPlay. This would in fact be able to manage autopilot and communication functions, beyond the simple tactile experience that drivers currently experience. But again, this is just a hypothesis.
Mobility and general public
To finish, theWall Street Journalraises the hypothesis of a complete robot-taxi service. Johannes Deichmann (McKinsey) is therefore counting on a complete fleet of driverless VTCs. This would indeed be designed by service providers, but in Apple's colors in order to stick to its habits in terms of image.
Among the competitors of such an application, we could then cite Amazon's Zoox or Cruise, which came under the ownership of General Motors for an amount which would be around a billion dollars.
