iOS 18: Apple defends controversial Photos app redesign

iOS's native Photo Library is set to get its biggest overhaul yet in iOS 18, according to Apple. But of course, who says redesign, says change, which implies a rehabilitation of the user. Unfortunately for Apple, according to the opinions of beta testers, the Photos application in iOS 18 is not unanimous, far from it.

Following a major bug whichmade deleted snaps reappear in iOS 17.5, the Photos app had already been the subject of strong criticism. In its iOS 18 version, it once again faces mixed opinions from users.beta testers. The Apple firm, for its part, seems very satisfied as evidenced byan interview with three of its leaders, granted to The National News. In addition to the rearrangement of the photo library and AI features, Apple executives spoke about the measures put in place, which aim to strengthen the security of the app.

Eliminate friction

Senior director of Apple's human interface design unit, Billy Sorrentino, told The National News:

As our features, users, and libraries have grown, so has the density of the application. So rather than searching and pecking everywhere, we created a simple, streamlined, single-view photo experience based on deep intelligence. Ultimately, we wanted to eliminate friction.

External access to your photo library

After the app's previous setbacks, Apple wanted to reassure, particularly regarding third-party API access to Photos. The firm specifies that yes, third-party APIs can request access to your photo library, butalways with your consent. The vice president of camera and photos within Apple's software engineering team, Jon McCormack, clarifies in the interview:

We make it very clear that when an application uses an API [application programming interface] for the first time, we will inform the user exactly what that application is asking for.
