The latest version of iOS 18hides an unfortunate surprise in the Messages application, despiteits excellent new features. A recently discovered bug maycause your conversations, including photos and videos, to be lostwhich are associated with it. This anomaly was highlighted by an attentive reader and confirmed by the team of9to5Mac.
A dial that wreaks havoc
The problem occurs in a very specific scenario:when a user responds in a thread to a shared Apple Watch face. This functionality, designed precisely to facilitate the exchange of personalized configurations of the watch screen, paradoxically becomes the source of the problem.
Once the bug is triggered,Messages app keeps crashing, making it impossible to access the conversation in question. Even more worrying, the problem affects both interlocutors, transforming a simple exchange into a real headache.
The radical solution: delete to save
Faced with this dysfunction, the only currently known solution is drastic:delete the conversation thread entirely. This method, while effective in stopping crashes, unfortunately results in the irretrievable loss of all chat history, including media files that may not have been saved elsewhere.
Apple has not yet communicated on this bug, but it is likely that a corrective update is necessary for iOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11 and all beta versions currently in development. In the meantime, caution is required:avoid responding at all coststo an Apple Watch face shared in a thread.
For those who have already been victims of this bug, a glimmer of hope remains (phew!), even if it is not perfect.Restoring from a backupmight help recover lost data, although using iCloud sync for the Messages app might complicate this solution.
- An iOS 18 bug in the Messages app can cause crashes and lost conversations when replying to a shared Apple Watch face.
- The only current solution to stop crashes is to delete the thread, resulting in permanent loss of data.
- A patch update is expected, and restoring from backup may partially recover lost data.
