Apple has just announced the compliance of the latest beta version of iPadOS 18. The operating system for the Apple brand's tablets willrespect the DMA more scrupulously, the sovereign legal text in Europe on the fight for free economic competition in digital technology.
This announcement, made by Apple this morning, comes a few hours after the announcement by the European Commission and through the voice of its President Margarethe Vestager of the opening of an investigation against Apple. The apple brand risks a fine of several tens of billions of dollars.
In a press release issued to developers on iPad, Apple explains that the latest version of iPadOS 18 respects the rules dictated by the European Union (only on the territory of the latter). These changes concern in particular the arrival of competitors to the App Store or Safari,as is already the case on iPhone.
At the end of April, the European Commission ruled that iPadOS was part of the services, in the same way as iOS, which were “access controllers”. The apple brand therefore had to comply with the new European rules, under penalty of sanctions.
What’s new for developers?
These changes made by Apple should give more freedom to third-party developers. In particular, they will be able to offer their applications via services independent of Apple. A solution that already exists on iPhone, but which is not very successful.
The Apple brand announced in its press release that developers will also be able to control the functionalities linked to the NFC chip in the tablet. Finally, they will be able to use default search engines other than Safari, Apple's in-house solution.
