iPhone 15: some users report screen problems (updated)

October 18 update:iOS 17.1 should fix the problem.

It has now been more than a month since the keynote took place. Little by little, delivery times for new Apple smartphones are reducing and supply chains are reaching cruising speed. Furthermore, who says new products, necessarily says new problems. We have already spoken here aboutoverheating of iPhone 15 Pro, and also some other minor issues. Concerning the devices which overheated, the Apple firm hasfixed this issue with iOS 17.0.3.

There is, however, one part of the phone that until now seemed to not suffer any inconvenience: the screen. Some owners have reported that their new smartphoneimage retention.

Yes, OLED is great, but…

Whether it's the 15 or the 15 Plus, the 15 Pro or the Pro Max, all the latest iPhones are equipped with an OLED display. This screen technology is very popular because, compared to others, it:

  • offers better brightness;
  • offers a more intense and deep color rendering;
  • prevents light leaks.

For example, black is much deeper on an OLED screen than on LCD. The reason for this is very simple: the OLED is capable of turning off some of its diodes, while the LCD activates its backlight permanently.

There is however a but with this technology, everything is not perfect unfortunately. OLED screens indeed have the unfortunate habit of image retention, or “burn in" in English. Burn in is a phenomenon that occurs whenthe same pixels remain static for a long time. If, for example, you leave the home page of your iPhone open for several dozen hours, it is possible that your screencontinues to display some snippets of the page,and this,even after leaving her, like this:

This incident was reported by some iPhone 15 Pro Max users, other models do not seem to be affected. Especially since, according toAppleInsider, there is nono more phones affected by this problem than in previous years, nothing alarming for Apple.

Is this repairable?

If you are affected by a burn in problem on your OLED screen, know that it is sometimes possible to rectify it. If the phenomenon is too pronounced, it may be necessary to replace the display. On the other hand, if it is a slight retention, you can try tolet the screen turn to a solid colorfor a long time. This is to redistribute the loads on the pixels.
