iPhone 17 Air: here are its supposed characteristics

We know a little more about the iPhone 17 “Air” that Apple should present in a little less than a year. In a new report published by Apple brand specialist Wayne Ma, we learn that this iPhone 17 “Air” would be significantly thinner than all other Apple devices.

The report mentionsa thickness of between 5 and 6 millimeters. For comparison, the latest iPhone 16 is 7.8 millimeters thick. It's even worse for the iPhone 16 Pro whose size reaches 8.25 mm. The last time an iPhone was built this thin was whenthe arrival of the revolutionary iPhone 6.

With a new chassis and a much larger screen, this new iPhone was intended to be as thin as possible. Apple seems to have played with the limits of physics over the years, with the iPhone 7 having been known to bend and twist with use because it was too thin.

An ever thinner iPhone, but at what price?

Nearly a decade later, the apple brand's ambitions for finesse are still there. But this attraction for an ever smaller phone has consequences on other characteristics. This is particularly the case for the SIM card. Although this should not change much for American consumers, who have abandonedthe physical SIM cardSince the iPhone 14, the rest of the world still uses these chips to insert into the iPhone to unlock a phone plan.

Another new feature expected this year on the iPhone 17 “Air” is the absence of a speaker on the bottom of the device. Apple would not have the space to add a second speaker to its iPhone. The apple brand would therefore be satisfied with the one placed at the top of the phone, at ear level.

Small battery and small 5G modem

Everything in this iPhone has been designed to save as much space as possible. The components will literally step on each other and it isimpossible to integrate a huge battery into such a phone. Apple will therefore reduce the size of its battery as much as possible.

In order to save a little space, Apple could choose to useits own 5G modems. Today iPhones are equipped with 5G modems built by Qualcomm. But it's no secret that Apple has been working on its own chips for years. The apple brand even hasbought the Intel branchresponsible for the design of 5G modems for 1 billion dollars.

The iPhone 17 Airs could therefore be Apple's first smartphone with such a modem. A way to test the capabilities of this chip before a more global launch the following year?

Finally, the last accessory assumed by Wayne Ma's report, the camera. The iPhone 17 Airs should only have a single lens on its back, like an iPhone SE. These choices, necessary to reduce the size of the phone, should have a significant impact on the price of the latter.
